The New Huta was built in the opposite to
intellectual and anticommunist Cracow as a district for steel workers in
40's and early 50's last century. It was typical socialist realism
architecture with its general planning area of living. Together with the
Iron Curtains fell down the Lenin's Monuments standing in Central Market of
New Huta but it didn't solve the problems of this district. The New Huta
became a settlement of poverty, unemployment, frustrations and delinquency.
Since few years this situation has started changing for better. Former
communism district became a trendy and fashionable place. Also it is a very
important and popular spot for a international tourists coming to Cracow and
a centre of many cultural events. The pictures are portraits of few
people who decided to create a new identity of New Huta and for whom living
in New Huta is only a reason of proud. Portraits of people are put together
with portraits of connected with them places in New Huta.
